Official times for the Buffalo Half Marathon: Jim: 1:57:19 (8:57 pace-- wow!); Dave: 2:00:28 (a snappy 9:11 pace); Bill: 2:07:31 (9:44-- I'll take it); Tom: 2:08:47 (9:49-- not bad at all).

Photoshopped romance novel covers. "He Was So Pretty I Felt Like A Lesbian". "Climb My Pelvis". "The Cleavage of Marie Ann Pushup (He loved her for her openness... he could have done without the vest, though.)" Posted by Hello

It seems to me that the continuing ubiquity of Paris Hilton pretty much conclusively establishes the need to revive "Hollywood Squares". I mean, what else can be done about her? We could get Elton John for the Paul Lynde chair, maybe....

Just had a look at the map: we start out at 8:15 on the corner of Amherst and Colvin. We go out Colvin in to Kenmore, horse around there for a bit, then come back down Colvin, through the park to Nottingham, out to Elmwood to Bidwell Parkway, over to Richmond, down Richmond to Summer, over to Delaware and on to the finish. The second leg-- the anchor leg of the relay-- is probably one of the most attractive parts of the whole course, so we got that going for us, which is nice.

I went to Fleet Feet Saturday to buy a pair of summer kicks, and now I've got new shoes, and a couple of packs of Espresso Love GU-- I'm completely good to go.

What can I do but tip my hat and call your mom my Daddy? I figured Afleet Alex as the winner but bet him only in my exacta box with High Fly, Closing Argument and Greeley's Galaxy. The Racing Form liked Scrappy T "only in the bottom of the exotics."

My mom had Scrappy T across the board and cashes a ticket.

For some reason I was unaware that there was a Preakness cocktail, but I thought I'd look it up, just to see if there was something the ants would like. What d'you know:

1. 1 1/2 oz. of Blended Scotch Whisky.

2. 3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth.

3. 1/2 tsp. Benedictine.

4. Dash of Bitters.

5. Stir all ingredients with ice.

It doesn't say if you are supposed to drink it, or just pour it down the sink. (Actually, it's a Rob Roy with a slug of Benedictine, presumably in tribute to the Pope.)

While the Bush Administration prepares to invoke the Alien and Sedition Acts to shut down "Revenge of the Sith", I want to say the Kentucky Derby sucked out all the fun of handicapping horses for me. Luck is obviously important (as in guessing correctly) but pure luck cannot be uncovered in The Racing Form. This road leads to nihilism. So I bet tomorrow with a heavy heart.

From Drink At Work: Effects of Florida’s New NRA-Supported “Stand Your Ground” Law

Citizens can recreate fun of “Deadwood” minus intelligent dialogue.

Devil Rays feel more pressure to actually win a game.

By allowing everyone to shoot anywhere, Governor Jeb Bush proves that when he says he “values life,” he only means that of the unborn or clearly brain dead.

Moe, Larry and-- hey! Where's Charley Watts? Posted by Hello

Jim: Sorry to let you down. I'm "too smart" to play longshots like that.

Bill: Don't give up on me yet. I just ain't the pope.

Scott Ostler, Answer Man:
Q: What’s next for Bellamy Road, the George Steinbrenner-owned horse that finished seventh at the Kentucky Derby?

A: A dignified “retirement” is in store for the gallant steed. He has been stuffed and mounted and fitted with skate wheels and a motor. He will bring Yankee relievers in from the bullpen.

Incidentally, that procedure undergone by Bellamy Road is known as Don Zimmer surgery.

I just cashed my dad's Derby ticket: $89.90. I'll be sure to get his Preakness pick early, so I can post it here.

I boxed an exacta with Afleet Alex, Noble Causeway, Wilko and ARod, I mean Bellamy Road. Nobody had Giacomo unless they liked his name or colors or number, or picked him out of a hat, or was betting every horse. Mr A. bets across the board on a 70-1 long shot; must have liked the name. $2 exacta pays over $9000.

That's why they run the races

I boxed Noble Causeway, Sun King and Afleet Alex. My father had me bet Closing Argument across the board for him, and cashes a ticket.

I'm liking Nobel Causway and Sun King, and I'm thinking that some money on Afleet Alex might be money wisely invested. Further study seems warranted-- the only place I know that carries The Racing Form is in South Buffalo. Maybe I'll stop at the Blackthorn for a refreshing Guinness.

Place your bets! I've started my research and will post my choices for the Derby before post-time on Saturday. Bill, what you got?

ALSO:

Last night on my way out to the car, as I passed through the Tralf Building as usual, I could hear the "BAWRAN-N-N-G! BAWRAN-N-N-G!" sound of the Supersuckers sound-checking their guitars.

Sigh.

CLA has been stressing out over the AP exams, which is better than her not stressing I suppose, but makes her kinda agravating to be around. She actually took yesterday off to study, but I told her that if she wanted to do that she would have to do some kind of excercise with me when I got home, so that she could clear her mind, and get to sleep better. She agreed, but it had slipped my mind at lunch. I was feeling high energy, and tore off a five miler, out Niagara, down Porter to LaSalle Park, past the Largest Inland Naval Park in the world then back up Pearl. When I got home, CLA wanted to go for a bike ride, but couldn't unlock her bike, so that was us, in the last light of the day, running around the Ring Road, tossing a rugby ball back and forth. The good news is that I can do this; the bad news is that I did do it.
