A lot of people are calling for the Mets to put it all together this year, and go all the way. I also note that ESPN's Daily Quickie says of the Tribe/Sox opener: "Here's what we know about these two teams, based on the way last season went down: 161 games from now, this ONE game might determine not only who wins the AL Central, but who beats back the Yankees or Red Sox or A's or Angels for the AL Wild Card." Myself, I never count the Yankees out, but I'll stake a bottle of single malt on the Metropolitans because I like their pitching. Gentlemen?

25 anecdotes about Ricky Henderson.

The Music Genome Project has created a nifty little app called Pandora. You tell it the names of artists or songs that you like and it creates a streaming "radio station" that plays stuff that's like that. So far it seems to work: I pluged in Miles, and Monk and Dylan and the Stones and some other stuff and it has played back James Moody and Carla Bley and Bill Charlap and Gerry Mulligan along with some Miles and some Monk. And oh yeah, ""2000 Light Years From Home". Artificial Intelligence-- whadda you gonna do?

Let's say we were targeting a 1:56:09 half marathon pace. The week one workout would look like this: Saturday, six miles (or the Ridge-- I think that's harder); Tuesday, 4X400 (400s--HMP, minus 75 seconds, divided by 4-- in our example, that would be 1:56.75 pace); Wendsday, 4 miles tempo (HMP minus 15 seconds-- 8:37 pace-- pretty stiff-- more of a target for me, I'd say). That's not so bad, is it?

It was clear and bright by the time I got back to Buffalo yesterday, but out at the Ridge the fog had been thick, and there'd been snow in the air. Not exactly what I'd anticipated running in. "You never know what you're going to get out here," Captain X said as we started out. It looked like an Ansel Adams print, and although there was enough white on the ground to make me cautious about footing, it wasn't slippery. I'll be pleased when it warms up enough for shorts, but it was good to be out there in the final traces of winter.

I've tried all day, but I can't shake the image of Carol Channing naked from my mind.

A site for "Satanic Majesties" fans. See, this is what I love about the internet-- who knew there were "Satanic Majesties" fans? The album is close to unlistenable, but here's somebody who has lovingly assembled audio files of the studio tapes of the Stones making the album. (Via BoingBoing Posted by Picasa

It's snowing this morning, but last night it was almost too warm for long sleeves. I dropped LCA off at dance, and took a couple of Springtime laps around Delaware Park. I can't say I went fast, but I went hard, and it was glorious.

Nike has institued a new service: you can get a wake-up call from Justin Gatlin, Maria Sharapova, Amare Stoudemire, Kaitlin Sandeno, Monyca Byrne-Wickey, Liu Xiang, Joan Benoit Samuelson, or Alex Rodriguez. ESPN's Patrick Hruby has some proposed messages from some other athletes.

From Captain X, The Automatic Band Name Generator. Tone-Deaf Edsel? I've been listening to them for years. (Thanks, Sarge.)

Did you know the Stones made a commercial for Rice Crispies? Neither did I.

There was nothing to complain about over the conditions at this year's Shamrock-- I was way over-dressed, and felt like I was trying out for the wrestling team at the end. 48:12 chip time, 9:42 pace, not greased lightning, but a respectable baseline. Captain X recorded 48:52-- 9:50 pace. Our distaff member, Judy X-X pulled in at 52:49 a 10:37 pace, but the big news was Margot X, part of a field entry with the Nardin Woman's Crew team: 47:19 (9:31 pace). (I don't recall her getting by me-- it must have been as I was gazing longingly at the beer tent, rounding into The Longest Mile in Buffalo Sports.) Overall the X family averaged a 9:59 pace.

Man, I'm looking out my window and thinking that if these keeps up, I'll have to run the Shamrock in my Shamrock ski jacket.
