It was raining sheets when EGA and I got up Thanksgiving morning, but the prospective jibes of our family were enough to get us out of the house. "I don't know how to run five miles," EGA murmured, but as it turned out, she did. The rain cleared just about when we arrived, and as we passed the first mile I turned to someone running alongside me and said, "This is the first time this morning this has seemed like a good idea." The Prospect Park course starts off with a flat one mile + loop, then climbs a little for miles two and three. From that point it slopes down, and finishes flat. It really is my favorite park, and in the familiar Olmsted design the vistas open, then close so that it's always interesting to look at. I passed a couple of locals near the bandstand; in that rich cab driver's accent one was saying, "I don't care, it's Game Seven! How is Beltran not swinging?" Heading into the shoots I got a complement on my KRAC singlet, and I mentioned that we had team members running in three cities. A heavy mist resumed as I rounded into the last mile, and after we'd collected a bottle of water and an orange it was raining in earnest, so we went home and were house cats for the rest of the day. I hope everyone else had as good a Thanksgiving, and ran (even)faster.

After drifting into fall yesterday's six-miler was a jolt, and I figured that a little retail motivation was in order. I suppose I could have spent the winter on the treadmill in my old Brooks, but they were ready for retirement. I already like these better.
Adidas has an interesting approach to marathon training here (pdf) which is probably worth referencing for the cold weather. Three days a week, with a cross-training day, based on time rather than distance.

John Hall-- the guy that wrote "Half Moon" for Janis Joplin, the singer and guitarist from "Dance With Me" band Orleans-- was just elected, as a Democrat, to Hamilton Fish's old district. New York politics rocks!
