Jeff Pearlman figures out why listening to music during a race diminishes the experience. I don't bother even when I am on a treadmill, although at my gym there are televisions, which I watch soundlessly. Headphones or earbuds are too much bother. And absolutely if I'm in a race I want to hear the sounds of the race. I'm surprised that someone could work their way up to a marathon and not have figured that out.
